Salmon Price in Egypt: Types, Cuts and What Decides the Price
Salmon prices in Egypt depend on five things: whether it is fresh or frozen, where it comes from (Norway or Scotland), the cut (portion, fillet, whole side or whole fish), the brand, and the pack size. Smoked salmon and fresh Scottish salmon sit at the top of the range, frozen Norwegian fillet and chunks are the best value for everyday cooking, and bundles bring the price per kilo down further. 1. Fresh or frozen
Fresh (chilled) salmon is flown in and must be eaten within days, so it costs more. Frozen salmon is IQF-frozen (individually quick frozen) soon after processing, which locks in texture and taste, and it keeps for months in your freezer. For most home cooking, good frozen salmon tastes the same as fresh once cooked.
2. Origin: Norwegian or Scottish
Norwegian salmon is the most common worldwide and offers excellent value. Scottish salmon is produced in smaller volumes and is often chosen for sashimi and special occasions, so it is priced higher.
3. The cut
- Portions (200–400g): the easiest choice for weeknight dinners; each portion is one serving.
- Fillet (1kg) and half side: lower price per kilo, cut it yourself into portions.
- Whole side or whole fish: the best price per kilo for gatherings and large families.
- Chunks and minced salmon: the most economical, ideal for poke bowls, skewers, burgers and kids’ meals.
4. Smoked or raw
Smoked salmon goes through extra processing (curing, smoking and slicing), so the price per kilo is higher. Maxim Food smokes salmon in its own factory in Egypt as a member of the European Salmon Smokers Association (ESSA).
5. Pack size and bundles
Larger packs and bundles lower the price per kilo. If you cook salmon every week, a 2kg or 3kg bundle usually costs less than buying single packs.
How much salmon do you need?
- Main course: 180–200g per person.
- Starter or salad: 80–100g per person.
- A family of four: one 1kg fillet covers about five main courses.
How to choose good salmon
- Bright, even orange-pink colour with clear white lines of fat.
- Frozen packs should be hard frozen with no ice crystals inside the pack (a sign it thawed and refroze).
- Buy from a supplier with a documented cold chain and food-safety certification such as ISO 22000.

Why is fresh salmon more expensive than frozen?
Fresh salmon is flown in chilled and has a short shelf life, which adds transport and handling costs. Frozen salmon is shipped frozen and keeps for months, so it is cheaper per kilo.
Is frozen salmon as healthy as fresh?
Yes. Quick freezing keeps the protein and omega-3 fats. Thaw it overnight in the fridge for the best texture.
What is the cheapest way to buy salmon in Egypt?
Choose frozen Norwegian fillet, chunks or minced salmon, or buy a bundle. Orders of EGP 2,500 or more also get free delivery in Cairo and Giza.
Can I get salmon delivered today?
Yes. Maxim Food delivers the same day across Cairo and Giza for orders placed before 5 PM.
